Kubernetes Is the Infrastructure of the Future
The CNCF Annual Surveys reveal key cloud-native trends. The previous CNCF Annual Survey showed that Kubernetes adoption had become widespread and that Kubernetes had “crossed the chasm” to become mainstream.
The latest CNCF survey finds that “containers are the new normal.” Among those surveyed, 44% said they were using containers for nearly all applications and business segments, and another 35% said that containers were used for at least a few production applications.
The CNCF survey also cited Dynatrace's Kubernetes in the Wild 2023 report, which shows that “In 2022, Kubernetes became the key platform for moving workloads to the public cloud.” In doing so, says the report, Kubernetes has matured to the point where it has become the platform for running almost anything–emerging as the “operating system” of the cloud.
Still Early in the Cloud-Native Game
Despite all these advances, we are still in the early stages of cloud-native Kubernetes adoption. The latest CNCF survey found that just 30% of the organizations polled have adopted cloud-native approaches across nearly all development and deployment activities.
The biggest challenges responders reported in using and deploying containers were lack of training and security. In fact, lack of training was cited as the most significant barrier inhibiting adoption. It was the top challenge cited by 44% who have yet to deploy containers in production, and 41% of those who use containers on a limited basis. Once containers are used for nearly all applications, then security becomes the top challenge.
Reducing Complexity Through Platform Engineering
The concept of platform engineering as a replacement for DevOps emerged as a hot trend during last year’s KubeCon North America in Detroit. As Intellyx principle analyst Jason English reported, if there was one big takeaway from this year’s KubeCon 2022 conference, “it would be the re-emergence of the platform paradigm in cloud-native clothing.”
English’s observations were supported by a Cloud Native Computing Foundation blog that noted that “2022 was an explosive year for platform engineering.
Kaspar von Grünberg went as far as to sound the death knell for DevOps in his CNCF presentation entitled “DevOps Is Dead. Embrace Platform Engineering.”
